Youth Development Voyage

"Sail Training is designed to benefit young people, to give them a taste of fright, discomfort and adventure in an age when it is possible to live comfortably, securely and boringly." (His Royal Highness Duke of Edinburgh Patron of the International Sail Training Association.)

Sail training on the One & All is a unique educational experience where trainees learn basic sailing skills by operating a traditionally rigged sailing ship.  Trainees must learn to work together in an isolated environment where the objective is personal development with enjoyment.

Sail training voyages are recognized by SSABSA, and each student who participates in a voyage can apply though their schools SACE coordinator for one stage 1 SACE units and receive them on the strength of the achievement certificate received on board the ship at the end of their sail training voyage.

Trainees come from all different backgrounds and are usually aged between 14 and 25 years although there is no upper age limit.  A maximum of 24 trainees can participate per voyage. During a voyage, which is usually between five and ten days, trainees become part of the ship's crew and form into three watches (groups) which in turn take responsibility for sail handling, helming and keeping lookout both day and night. Each watch lasts four hours, with two, two hour 'dog' watches in the afternoon. Trainees must be on deck for the duration of their watch.

On their first day, trainees are given a ship tour, taught basic terminology and line handling skills (including hauling on, coiling and securing or belaying lines) and are taught sail handling as they set the sails for the first time.  'Up and overs' provide a challenge as trainees climb up one side of the rig and down the other, ensuring they are familiar with climbing techniques and the operation of safety harnesses before taking to the open sea.

Throughout the voyage, trainees carry out all daily shipboard tasks with the crew's guidance.  This includes all sail handling (setting, handing, tacking, wearing and furling), climbing aloft, cleaning stations, galley duty, helming and bow watch.  Practical lessons are given in rope work and knot tying with lectures on shipboard safety, sail usage, parts and types and navigation.

The shipboard environment is conducive to personal development as trainees learn the importance of teamwork and problem-solving.  Fears are overcome as challenges are met and self esteem is improved as trainees gain the confidence to work the ship together.

A seven-day Sail Training Voyage is $1500 per person. We may be able to assist in subsidising your voyage. Please call us on (08) 8341 2004 to enquire.
